The headlines about the Ketogenic diet are contradictory and confusing. But still, many people are switching over to the high fat/very low carb diet. The personal stories of dramatic weight loss and disease reversal are compelling. So why are some experts still warning us to stay away?

What is the Ketogenic diet?

The ketogenic diet has surged in popularity in recent years, largely for its weight loss results.  But people on keto don’t just lose weight. They have been reporting a wide range of health benefits, including improved mental clarity, reduced risk factors for heart disease, increased energy and improved athletic performance. The keto diet is being used medically for conditions as wide ranging as diabetes, epilepsy, Alzheimer's disease, cancer, PCOS, and migraines. The research behind the keto diet is mostly new and short-term but very promising.

How does the Keto diet work?

When we eat a diet with a balance of carbohydrates, proteins and fats , the body converts the carbohydrates  we consume into glucose in the blood and brain and glycogen in the muscles and liver.  This supplies a lot of our energy.  In nutritional ketosis (this is where the name Keto diet originates), we starve the body of glucose so it is forced to use fats in the form of ketones as an energy source for your body. This actually mimics the starvation state and allows our brain to have an alternative fuel source in the absence of a ready supply of food.  This was evolutionarily advantageous when food was sometimes in short supply.

Are there any side effects to the Keto diet?

When the body transitions from burning glucose to burning ketones -- usually about 4-5 days after starting the diet -- some people experience the “keto flu”. This is a very temporary state, which may include headache, weakness, irritability, bad breath, and fatigue. Other ongoing side effects can include constipation and muscle cramps. The CARESPACE Ketogenic Assistance Program can help improve results and mitigate these side effects.
